The speculation about The Game Awards has been intense, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it kicked off the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities you can achieve if you're playing as a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously flexible, allowing players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a inventive way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can get ready for another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
